Study of 21 interviewees from three Facebook bartering groups (≈45,000, 8,000, 1,500 members) shows Venezuelans appropriating Facebook to barter diapers and medicine and coordinate via posts and Messenger, succeeding often but facing scams, price gouging, fake products and trade cancellations due to anonymous profiles and no enforcement. Findings identify supporting affordances—group rules, moderators, public access, flexible matching—and propose concrete fixes: buyer and seller reviews, centralized tools to track offenses, prominent role placement and graduated sanctions to make solidarity economies more reliable.
