Qualitative analysis of 1,500 Reddit threads about Zika finds two kinds of perceived risk—direct infection harms and harms from authorities’ measures—and dimensions running personal-to-global and immediate-to-long-term. Coding reaches saturation across 7,100 comments, with recurring specifics: locals report pesticide spraying at the wrong time, shrimp and bee kills, and worries about lifelong effects for exposed children. Proposals include passive social media analytics, moderated online forums, and bi-directional channels so public knowledge can complement professional risk models.
