Two lab studies define concrete requirements for on‑demand expert help: a five‑participant study finds four of five asked for task execution beyond Q&A and 82% context‑dependent requests, and a 24‑person remote pairing using Skype and JSBin surfaces six design needs including immediate responses and helpers’ desire to know coder background. A prototype with six features (text/voice request capture, automatic context packaging) is iterated with 11 participants and shows mixed gains but persistent communication breakdowns in 11 of 12 sessions.
