Proof-of-concept model maps pupil diameter to mental workload across six controlled lighting levels using an SMI Red 250 at 120 Hz and an auditory n-back (0/1/2) task with 24 participants (4 excluded). Resulting pupil = per-illumination average + normalized task-evoked component, thresholds set from one-back mean ±1 SD, evaluated with 4-fold cross validation and 75% classification accuracy. Experiment uses 30 s averaged windows under discrete lamp and screen luminance conditions, notes need for calibration, continuous illumination handling, and real-time estimation.
