A Composable Emulation Framework for Whitebox Switches
summary
MirSwitch composes a production SONiC control plane with a modified VPP data plane and virtualized peripheral modules using an adapter-centric design: EVPP (VPP extensions), a semantic adapter, and an environmental adapter. It implements one-to-many and many-to-one SAI↔VPP translations, injects fake EEPROM/platform info to load real BSP drivers, and matches ECMP hash behavior. Evaluation shows 506K PPS per VM (3K PPS per port), 2.2× speedup vs. software baselines, 89.5% support across 157 functions, and deployment at Tencent troubleshoots 97.5% of 203 real issues.
