The taming of the kernel dump

Talkat Linux Plumbers Conference 2023 · 2023-11-13..11-15

A portable library called libkdumpfile parses many kernel dump formats, implements page-table translation for several ISAs, and can replace parts of makedumpfile — a proof‑of‑concept conversion runs and is as fast as before while removing ~3,600 lines. A Python‑based GDB server built on top of the library provides full kernel→user backtraces. Writing new-architecture support requires test dumps and spec reading (adding RISC-V64 tests took an intercontinental flight), and format‑to‑format write/clone remains unimplemented.
