Controlled study with 490 students compares three interventions: Homeworld Bound: Redux, digital spatial workbook exercises, and a programming lab control. Results show no measurable training effect versus test–retest, but low spatial skill students rate the game as more enjoyable. Level-by-level regression links spatial skill to performance specifically in B2 and B3 levels (Construction Mode), not Exploration Mode. Paper derives concrete prescriptions: asymmetry for object manipulation, require explicit 2D→3D translation, and add maps plus time pressure; code is on GitHub.
