RealPen: Providing Realism in Handwriting Tasks on Touch Surfaces using Auditory-Tactile Feedback
summary
Built an augmented stylus that recreates the friction oscillation and sound of pencil, ballpoint and marker by recording pen-tip vibrations with an accelerometer, extracting principal frequencies, weighting them by the actuator’s frequency response, and replaying superposed waveforms through a linear haptic actuator plus tablet speaker controlled by a microcontroller. Evaluated with 12 participants (648 trials): combined auditory-tactile feedback yields ~63% overall recognition and a 75% match for the best mockup, outperforming unimodal cues.
