Retwork: Exploring Reader Network with COTS RFID Systems
summary
Protocol identifies reader contention by piggybacking tag inventory flags to mimic a one-to-many write under EPC Gen2, then runs selective reads to mark overlaps. Prototype uses COTS readers and 8,000 commercial tags across up to 8 readers in a 12×8 m area, compatible with Magic/Impinj/Alien devices. Measured 14.7× speedup (55.9s → 3.9s for 5,000 tags), redundancy detection and network discovery run an order of magnitude faster, with <3.5% false positives and <0.3% false negatives.
