A conference-sized, thumb-editable assembly-style programming competition gets built as a mobile web UI and Rails backend, using Ruby, Sidekick jobs, rbspy profiling, and SQLite. Fairness comes from a 15-instruction stack VM with a Halton catch fire bomb, randomized start positions, and scan vs. bomb tradeoffs. Performance surprises: naive ActiveRecord cycles cost push runtime from about 750ms → 25ms per round, so cycles aren’t persisted and matches serialize to one Sidekick worker to avoid SQLite contention.
