Keynote: Leagues of Sea and Sky
summary
Three concrete case studies decide whether to watch: the longitude crisis that follows the 1707 loss of four warships and 2,000 men, the 30‑year John Harrison quest that ends with a pocket‑watch chronometer losing only seconds on an Atlantic trial and political theft by Nevil Maskelyne; the Orteig prize run that yields the 34‑hour non‑stop Spirit of St. Louis flight and the invisible engineer; and modern work pairing Oculus/HoloLens prototypes with JPL ops to land the Spirit rover on Mars and build a real mission‑grade presence system.
