The Rails Boot Process

Talkat RailsConf 2016 · 2016-05-04..05-06· [ruby-on-rails]

Explains exactly what files run and when: config/boot.rb calls Bundler.setup, config/application.rb loads railties then Bundler.require, the application class evaluates, config/environments/ runs last so its settings override application.rb, and Rails.application.initialize* runs the initializer groups. Rails exposes integration via Rails::Railtie and Rails::Engine, a vanilla app ships ~15 railties and ends up with about 120 initializers ordered by a topological sort; eager_load happens in production by default.
