Koala is a curated benchmark suite of real POSIX shell programs with permanently stored inputs and automated, configurable tooling that installs dependencies, runs tests, verifies outputs and emits runtime/memory/IO reports. The paper characterizes every shell feature across the suite, measures CPU time inside vs outside the interpreter, and shows scripts ranging from seconds to hours. Applying Koala to four acceleration systems (GNU parallel, pash, HS and others) yields widely varying speedups and some incorrect outputs, demonstrating practical trade-offs and reproducible evaluation via a light harness.
