A measurement framework called time trial implements the percentile-based Box test and finds what is and isn’t exploitable: LAN and EC2 networks distinguish ~100 ns shifts, typical Internet paths sit around 1 µs, and long tails make Gaussian assumptions useless. Microbenchmarks show modern 64-bit CPUs make per-byte string leaks effectively infeasible (sub-ns changes), but branching leaks—password checks, HMAC/API key comparisons that trigger extra I/O, CBC padding-oracle flows and DB lookups—are practically exploitable; a byte-by-byte padding-oracle demo and open-source tool validate the claims.
