Pair of ring-type accelerometers worn on fingers capture both gross-arm and fine-hand motion and yield a new metric, duration of active bilateral limb use, that correlates strongly with the Motor Activity Log and outperforms wrist-worn sensors on convergent validity. A mixed-methods study with 25 stroke survivors and 7 occupational therapists shows sensor responsiveness to motor changes and surfaces design requirements — goal setting, stepwise plans, reminders, and caregiver integration — for a self-monitoring mHealth system.
