Modernizing Accessibility for Desktop Linux

Talkat LinuxCon @ OSS NA 2024 · 2024-04-16..04-18· [accessibility]
slides:none on file

GNOME is building Newton, a Wayland-native accessibility architecture that replaces noisy per-query IPC with a push serialized accessibility tree model (full tree plus incremental updates) carried via Access Kit. Prototype implementations exist in Access Kit, mutter and Orca and demo end-to-end with Rust GUIs; GTK integration is in progress. Goals: support untrusted/sandboxed apps, cut latency and main‑thread blocking, and avoid global DBus baggage; open issues include serialization format (currently JSON prototype) and optimizing large-document updates. Funding: Sovereign Tech Fund; target inclusion in upcoming GNOME releases.
