summary
Rust shows concrete footholds in cloud native: 250 million lines of Rust across 370 CNCF repos, ranking #6, partial rewrites (CRI-O, containerd) work but force architectural and test changes, and interop uses CLI, gRPC (earlier perf issues), or Unix sockets with some platform quirks. The container runtime youki is fully Rust, OCI compatible and CNCF sandboxed in 2024, claiming much better speed than runc; its ecosystem relies on OCI Spec RS: a Rust crate with ~700 users since 2021. Start with isolated components and expect toolchain and distro compatibility work.
