More IOPS for Less: Exploiting Burstable Storage in Public Clouds
summary
Cloud burstable volumes (AWS gp2) start with equal burst credits per volume and credits are per-volume, not per-capacity. Using 10×10 GiB volumes replaced every 22 minutes with software RAID and RAID1 rebuild migration on c5 instances and measuring with fio, aggregated burst reaches 30,000 IOPS vs 300 IOPS baseline (100×) while incurring about 10% extra cost and rebuild dips; average effective gain is 93–99×. Compared to provisioned io1 for same throughput, cost drops ~97.5%.
