Digging into Kotlin-generated bytecode shows exact tradeoffs: string interpolation becomes a single StringBuilder, extension functions compile to static functions with receiver as first param, inline functions are actually inlined but lambdas and method references often generate anonymous classes that raise method count, collections box primitives unless using primitive factories and chained ops produce multiple loops unless converted to sequences, companion-object non-const vals cause surprising synthetic accessors and double assignments, and marking fields @JvmField or making values const eliminates getters and lots of waste.
