Test Automation: Do the Same but Better

A tiny Rails app that calculates an average rate and tests written in Ruby move from Selenium Firefox UI tests to direct DB inserts then to an internal JSON API, then to a pulled‑out calculation class RatesBroker and a RatesProvider data layer. Experiments show 5 UI runs in ~12s, a 100‑call API check in ~1s (projecting ~25,000 in five minutes), and unitized broker tests hitting 10,000 in 2s (extrapolated to >1,000,000 in five minutes). Trade‑offs and setup cost remain.
