Cloud-native desktop and application virtualization
summary
Cloud virtual desktops and app streaming are positioned as fully managed, pay‑as‑you‑go alternatives that promise security, scale and cost control: Amazon WorkSpaces offers persistent Windows or Linux desktops with a 99.9% SLA and pay‑hour or monthly billing breakeven at about 82–84 hours per month; AppStream 2.0 non-persistent desktops deliver lower‑cost full desktop sessions and autoscaling. The new WorkSpaces Streaming Protocol (WSP) goes GA after thousands of users and ~100,000 test hours and adapts codecs for high‑loss, high‑latency links. Real deployments include 1,200 WorkSpaces in two days (Grubhub) and 30,000 AppStream seats for LA County.
