Enabling Fast, Dynamic Network Processing with ClickOS
summary
ClickOS is a 5 MB MiniOS VM running Click that boots in 30 ms and hits 10 Gb/s line rate on one core for most packet sizes, with 40 µs added latency and ~5 Mpps middlebox rates. The build replaces Xen rings with netmap/valet rings, maps netmap buffers into guests to avoid cross-domain copies, adds multi-page IO rings, and shows 2.7–4× packet-rate gains versus the default Xen netback; results validate the VM plus netmap approach for high-speed software middleboxes.
