Apache TomEE is Tomcat plus the Java EE 6 Web Profile so a regular Tomcat runtime gains EJB, CDI, JPA, validation and web services support without changing Tomcat’s public interface. It ships as a zip or a few jars, makes only small Tomcat edits (a server listener and optional admin webapp), and already has 1.5.0 release and Web Profile certification. Example: servlet 3.0 apps can inject EJBs and CDI beans, expose REST and SOAP endpoints and run with Tomcat tools unchanged.
