Shoes is a small Ruby toolkit for desktop apps in Ruby that claims you can skip HTML JavaScript and databases and just write UI with a few Ruby blocks the talk demos a text editor calculator tank game a drawing app and a hiragana quiz called mujibake built by converting characters to images because old Shoes lacks Unicode support most components run but the old C implementation shows caching, console errors and block/end bugs the project is being reimplemented as jruby + SWT and many examples fit in ~34 lines of Ruby.
