SmartSweep uses a dual-heap design with a region-based remote heap and local heap cache, estimates region liveness with a liveness bitmap and a card table of forward-reference updates, and selectively moves regions back over NVMe mmap for local GC instead of scanning remote objects. Prototype on OpenJDK17 evaluates Spark and Neo4j, handling mainly primitive and leaf objects, achieves comparable runtime to TeraHeap while reducing peak remote memory by up to 49%, and avoids out-of-memory failures by prompt reclamation.
