Building a binary protocol client in Ruby: A magical journey!

Talkat LoneStarRuby Conf 2015 · on Saturday, 2015-08-15· [ruby, databases]

Rapid7 Metasploit developers build a pure-Ruby SMB library that parses and emits SMB v1/v2/3 packets, uses Wireshark to map wire captures to the spec (Wireshark has 800+ protocol dissectors), and relies on the bin_data DSL and pack/unpack for tight binary structs so code treats packets as Ruby objects. The client is socket-agnostic with injected dispatchers for pivoting, is BSD open source, and remains feature-in-progress toward 1.0.
