Rex starts as a GPL lexer generator and forks into rexical but licensing blocks extensions so a clean‑room reimplementation becomes Oedipus Lex. It is self-bootstrapping, written in its own language and passing its own tests, trading a hand‑tuned 966‑line lexer that "flogs at about 1200" for a more maintainable implementation reduced to 155 lines. Uses plain regular expressions, predicate methods for rule filtering, unit tests, and four remaining failing tests.
