Workshop on Virtual Machines and Language Implementations (VMIL ’21) The concept of Virtual Machines is pervasive in the design and implementation of programming systems. Virtual Machines and the languages they implement are crucial in the specification, implementation and/or user-facing deployment of most programming technologies. The VMIL workshop is a forum for researchers and cutting-edge practitioners in language virtual machines, the intermediate languages they use, and related issues.

language runtime engineers, vm implementers, compiler engineers, embedded systems engineers, WebAssembly developers, runtime tool authors, programming language researchers, performance engineers

A Small Scheme VM, Compiler and REPL in 4KSamuel Yvon, Marc Feeley15m
A Scheme system that compiles to a tiny bytecode and runs a REPL with an 850‑byte VM core and a full executable between 4–8 KB depending on chosen runtime…

WOOD: Extending a WebAssembly VM with Out-of-Place Debugging for IoT applicationsCarlos Rojas Castillo, Matteo Marra, Jim Bauwens, Elisa Gonzalez Boix15m
WOOD extends the WARDuino WebAssembly VM to implement out-of-things debugging: capture a debug session (PC, stack, globals), ship it as a binary debug-session…

Cross-Domain Compilation: Exploiting Synergies Across the CS CommunityTobias Grosser48m
Argues that MLIR turns many bespoke compilers into composable pieces and shows concrete work: a fast polyhedral math library for Presburger sets, a…

YJIT: A Basic Block Versioning JIT CompilerMaxime Chevalier Boisvert, Noah Gibbs, Jean Boussier, Si Xing (Alan) Wu, Aaron Patterson, Kevin Newton, John Hawthorn17m
YJIT is a JIT built inside CRuby that implements Lazy Basic Block Versioning to record and specialize types only for paths actually seen at runtime. It runs as…
