The Haskell Implementors’ Workshop is a forum for those involved in implementing Haskell systems, infrastructure, libraries and tools, for people generally involved in implementing Haskell technology. We share our work and discuss future directions and collaborations with others. In 2023, the Haskell Implementors’ Workshop will be co-located with ICFP 2023. The workshop does not have proceedings. Talks and/or demos are proposed by submitting an abstract and selected by a small program committee. The workshop will be informal and interactive, with a flexible timetable and plenty of room for ...

GHC developers and maintainers, Haskell compiler plugin authors, runtime and garbage collection engineers, library and tool implementors (Liquid Haskell etc.), Haskell language researchers and implementors, Haskell full-stack framework authors

GHC release cadence and roadmap; delimited continuations for effects; Template Haskell compilation speedups; Liquid Haskell GHC integration; custom error annotation plugins; GHC breakpoint and debugger plugin; info table allocation profiling; MMTk garbage collector integration; non-updateable thunk (dupIO) technique; deriving-as-a-library with dict primitive; workqueue/algorithm generator from rules; IHP full-stack Haskell web framework

GHC status reportSimon Peyton Jones, Ben Gamari01h 22m
GHC moves on a six‑month cadence with six minor fixes since 9.4.1, 9.6 in March and 9.8 due around October, 9.10 forking in January; notable additions include…
Talk
Integrating Liquid Haskell with GHCFacundo Domínguez29m
Liquid Haskell runs as a GHC plugin and is ~60,000 lines of code with about 30,000 lines touching the GHC API; upgrades lag by several versions and the last…

Error Message Annotation Plugins for HaskellDylan Thinnes23m
Proposes a custom-error plugin interface for GHC that detects emitted type errors and either annotates or replaces them at pretty-print time, implemented…

An Algorithm Generator for Fixed-point Oriented Programming (Lightning Talk)Henry Blanchette, Michael D. Adams09m
Tool generates concrete worklist/workqueue code from high-level fixed‑point rules, producing optimized implementations (not just an interpreter) for examples…

Advancements in info table profiling (Lightning Talk)Finley McIlwaine09m
Info table profiling attributes heap allocations to specific info tables using flags like -finfo-table-map and -fdistinct-constructor-tables, and produces…

GHC Plugin for Setting BreakpointsAaron Allen24m
A GHC plugin implements breakpoints that actually pause all threads in concurrent programs and does not require the bytecode interpreter, using a renamer…

Building web apps with Haskell and IHP (Lightning Talk)Marc Scholten17m
IHP is an opinionated Haskell full‑stack framework that demonstrates a live CRUD app built in minutes using a code generator, a visual schema designer…

Deriving as a library (Lightning Talk)Li-yao Xia12m
Proposes removing the deriving keyword from GHC and implementing deriving as a library using first-class instances and a simple dict primitive that exposes…

MicroHaskell (Lightning Talk)Lennart Augustsson10m
A tiny Haskell implementation boots itself: runtime in C and a combinator-based compiler in Haskell recompile twice in under 30 seconds, producing identical…

Using MMTk Garbage Collection in GHC (Lightning Talk)Junming Zhao15m
A working MMTk-GHC binding teaches GHC to allocate with MMTk’s bump allocator, adds a Rust closure scanner, and runs a no-GC then IMix non-moving plan…

Severing ties: the need for non-updateable thunksEdsko de Vries27m
Lazy thunk updates create long in-memory instruction chains and trigger expensive major GCs; duplicating thunks before pattern-matching severs those links so…
Talk on
ghc-specter: a GHC plugin that inspects the GHC state on liveIan-Woo Kim26m
ghc-specter is a GHC driver plugin that opens a bidirectional socket to a visualizer daemon and inserts breakpoints at compiler hooks, letting the build pause…
Talk on
Execution domains in GHC/Haskell (Lightning Talk)Ben Gamari14m
Proposes adding domains to GHC: per-domain local heaps with independent GC and schedulers plus explicit shared global heap regions to avoid duplicating…

Kudzu (Lightning Talk)Shae Matijs Erisson06m
Kudzu runs property-based tests until GHC HPC’s per-region counters stop increasing, using RTS hooks (examineTicks) to read coverage at runtime and keep…
